If the centrifugal switch is defective, the motor may not work correctly. The run capacitors are used in single-phase AC motors to strengthen the auxiliary coil so that a rotating magnetic field can be formed when the motor is running. The run capacitors work continuously when the motor is activated. Dual run capacitors are polypropylene film capacitors. Based on application of the capacitor, the rating of the capacitors ranges from 1.5 to 100 µF for different voltages. It is very important to use the correct rating of the capacitor. If the capacitor rating is different from the original, an uneven magnetic field can be formed in the motor resulting in uneven rotation on load. Let us understand, how to Discharge Capacitor?

  • If the capacitor is connected to the circuit of the PCB, then we should properly de-solder it and disconnect it. Ensure, not to touch the terminals of the capacitor. Now, with an insulated screwdriver, touch both the terminals of the capacitor with the metal part of the screwdriver. You may see a spark and hear some crackling sound as an indication of electric discharge. Repeat this a couple of times to ensure that the capacitor is completely discharged.
  • Discharging the capacitor by using a Discharge Resistor which is also called Bleeder Resistor. This is a safe practice to discharge the capacitor. This method is used in power supplies and other similar circuits where a Resistor, known as a Bleeder Resistor, is placed in parallel to the output capacitor so that when the power is turned off, the remaining charge in the capacitor is discharged through this bleed resistor. Take a higher value resistor which can be usually in kilo Ohms, with a high power rating example 5W, and connect it across the terminals of the capacitor. Instead of directly connecting the resistor, you can use wires with crocodile clips on both ends. The capacitor will discharge slowly and you can monitor the voltage across the terminals of the capacitor with a multimeter.

How to check the washing machine capacitor?

  • Method 1 :
  • One of the easiest, quickest and most accurate methods to test a capacitor is using a Digital Multimeter with a Capacitance Meter feature. Most of the Digital Multimeters include this functionality. The capacitance meter on the digital multimeters often displays the capacitance reading. To check if the Capacitor is working or defective, using a Multimeter, disconnect the Capacitor from the circuit board and discharge it completely, then set the multimeter to Capacitance Setting and connect the capacitor terminals to note the reading. If the capacitor ratings are known and visible on its body, make a note of it. Usually, the capacitance unit is displayed in Farads and micro Farads. It is printed on the body along with the voltage ratings. In the Digital Multimeter, set for capacitance reading, then connect the multimeter probes to the capacitor. If it is a polarized capacitor, connect the red probe to the positive terminal of the capacitor, and the black probe to the negative terminal. If it is non – polarized capacitor, you can connect it either way as they do not have polarity. Now, check the readings on the Digital Multimeter. If the multimeter readings are closer to the actual values as mentioned on the capacitor, then the capacitor can be considered a good capacitor. If the difference between the actual value and the measured reading is significantly large or sometimes zero, then you should replace the capacitor as it is defective.

  • Method 2 :
  • Some of the low-end and cheap Digital Multimeters do not include Capacitance Meters or Capacitance Settings. For Testing a Capacitor using a Multimeter which has no Setting for Capacitance reading, remove the Capacitor from the circuit or board and make sure it is completely discharged. Set the Multimeter to measure resistance, set the knob to Ohm or Resistance reading Settings. If there are multiple ranges of resistance measurement, on a manual multimeter, select a higher range which can be often 20 KΩ to 200 KΩ. You can connect the multimeter probes to the leads of the capacitor as red to positive and black to negative terminals for polarized capacitors. The Digital Multimeter will show a reading of resistance on the display and then the resistance of an open circuit. Make a note of the reading that is displayed initially for a short period. Then disconnect the capacitor from the multimeter and you should repeat the test several times. All test readings, should be, the similar result on the display for a good capacitor. If there is a difference, in the resistance reading in the further tests, the capacitor is dead. This method of testing the capacitor is not accurate. It can differentiate between good and bad capacitors. Then, this method doesn’t give the capacitance of the capacitor.
